Vanguard, the world's second largest asset management giant, currently oversees over 9 trillion US dollars in assets, second only to the 10 trillion US dollars managed by BlackRock. In January, the company faced widespread criticism and even a backlash and divestment movement from the cryptocurrency community after refusing to provide Bitcoin spot ETF trading services to clients and announcing that it will no longer accept purchases of cryptocurrency products.

Today, Vanguard announced a major change in its leadership as CEO Tim Buckley declared his retirement at the end of 2024, concluding his over six-year tenure. The company is now in search of a successor for Buckley, while also appointing the current chief investment officer, Greg Davis, as the president with expanded responsibilities. Despite other major financial institutions in the United States accepting recently approved Bitcoin spot ETFs, including its largest competitor BlackRock issuing its own BTC spot ETF "IBIT" with an AUM surpassing 7.1 billion US dollars in just over a month, Vanguard remains steadfast in its stance against offering cryptocurrency-related products on its brokerage platform and has no plans to launch a Vanguard Bitcoin ETF or other cryptocurrency-related products. The company's senior management has publicly stated that cryptocurrency is more speculative than an investment, which is the root of the decision not to offer such products.

With Buckley's announcement of his impending departure, speculation on social media is rife as to whether his departure is related to the company's anti-cryptocurrency stance and whether the new leadership at Vanguard will bring about a change in attitude towards cryptocurrency. Some bold predictions even suggest that the company's next move might be to introduce its own Bitcoin spot ETF.
